I have recently just finished reading The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. My teacher assigned my classmates and I into inquiry groups. All the groups had to pick a book that has been on the banned book list. My group picked TATDOAPTI (The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian). Each person had choose whether the book should be banned or not. I think that this book should be banned and not be allowed in school libraries.
Throughout the book inappropriate words/terms are said. If this book is not banned from school libraries than kids in elementary school could read this book. I don't think that parents with 10 year olds would want their child to be reading this book. An example of one of the many inappropriate words are "dickward". This word is being used against people in the book. Another example of an inappropriate term is "boner", a lot of kids don't know what some of these words mean. So these kids might start to ask their parents what these word mean. A lot of parents won't want to explain what a boner is to their small child.
Another example on why TATDOAPTI should be banned is because books can influence kids to do things. In this book Junior, the main character, had a cat. After the cat died he wanted to disappear. In the book Junior says," I though about crawling into a hole and disappearing forever. That example shows that Oscar meant a lot to him. So what would happen if a kid reads this book, and their pet dies. Junior could influence them to make bad decision. Another example is the article " The 'sick-lit' books aimed at children: It's a disturbing phenomenon. Tales of teenage cancer, self harm and suicide...", by Tanith Carey. In this article, Amanda Craig knows a girl, of 12 years of age who cuts. "'I know a girl of 12 whose class the book spread like wildfire (Red Tears) - several of them also started cutting themselves," says Amanda.
Some people may argue that this book shouldn't be banned, because of the racism. Because racism happens in the real world. But this book should be banned, especially because of the racism mentioned in this book. For example in TATDOAPTI when a bully goes up to Junior at his new school he says, "'Hey cheif,' Roger said.'You want to hear a joke?' 'Sure' I said'. 'Did you know that Indians are living proof that niggers fuck buffalo?" This example shows that Roger, thinks that it is ok to say a racist joke to Junior. Another example of racism in this book is because, Indians and Black people may get affended by the racism in this book. And kids could get convinced that their race is "more" than another race.
In conclusion The Absolutely True Diary of Part-Time Indian should be banned. I say this because there is a lot of curse words and inappropriate contents in this book. Some of the actions in this book could influence readers to do some of these actions. If the book doesn't get banned, there should be an age limit on who can have this book in their school or class libraries.
